From September 12th to 14th, the XXVIII Congress of the Società Italiana di Ecologia (SItE) took place in the Ex-Manifattura Tabacchi, Cagliari (Sardinia), an historic building from the second half of the 18th century, located in the city centre and currently hosting numerous cultural events.
With the title “Conservation, restoration and adaptation of ecosystems in the Anthropocene“, the Congress had as main aim to gather the national scientific community around a common table to discuss the mechanisms of alteration and adaptation of ecosystems to global changes and the new frontiers of conservation and restoration of ecosystems. The congress witnessed the participation of excellent foreign researchers in the various areas of ecological research. With them, the leading national experts in the field of ecological sciences were called to make their contribution of knowledge to define the national “roadmap” towards adaptive and proactive management of ecosystems in the Anthropocene.
For its part, LifeWatch Italy mission is to support researchers and policy makers in better understanding, predicting and addressing the themes of global change. Being the national branch of the European e-Science infrastructure on biodiversity and ecosystems, LifeWatch Italy works to empower researchers, making available tools, services and virtual research environments for the share and access of ecological data. The Congress represented therefore an opportunity for LifeWatch-ITA to further contribute to the debate and comparison within the national scientific community with the organisation of its own session dedicated to “Data resources and eco-informatics tools for biodiversity research”.
Coordinated by Prof. Antonella Lugliè, and Drs. Bruno Cataletto and Angela Boggero, the LW-ITA session was held in the afternoon of September 13th, and ranged on a very wide field of interests. The seven oral contributions were held by representatives of different institutions, members and not of the LW-ITA Joint Research Unit, who presented tools and services of their relevance to be shared in the infrastructure, finally showing how effectively LifeWatch-ITA can support research groups in their activities.
This was one more step towards a wider diffusion of LW-ITA directly addressing the heart of the Italian ecological community, at the same time a chance for presenting the infrastructure’s resources, services and tools, and an opportunity to enhance its inclusiveness and widen its reach.
